Who is it for?
A lumbar discectomy is considered for people whose leg pain from a herniated disc has not improved with non-surgical treatment, or who have significant nerve weakness. The decision is always made together, after an examination and a review of the MRI.
Before surgery
- You will discuss the expected benefits and the risks, including infection, bleeding, nerve injury and the chance that the disc herniates again.
- Bring a list of all medicines; some may need to be paused.
- Arrange for someone to take you home.
During surgery
Under anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision in the lower back and, using a microscope, removes the part of the disc pressing on the nerve. The rest of the disc is left in place.
After surgery
- Most people are encouraged to get up and walk soon after the operation.
- Leg pain often improves early; numbness can take longer to settle.
- Increase activity gradually and follow your physiotherapy plan.
- Ask your surgeon when you can return to work, drive and exercise.
Warning signs after surgery
Contact the clinic urgently if you have fever, redness or discharge from the wound, new weakness, or any change in bladder or bowel control.
